Menard County is named for Pierre Menard, a pioneer Indian trader, Colonel of the Territorial militia, and first Lieutenant Governor of Illinois.

City Government: Petersburg, Illinois

Petersburg is named for Peter Lukins, one of the town founders who allegedly won the right to name the town in a card game. Petersburg became the Menard County Seat in 1839, after being surveyed by Abraham Lincoln in 1836.
