Bringing Petersburg, Illinois to the World Wide Web

Visited your town this last summer and was delighted by the history rich community. Spent two days just at New Salem and Petersburg. I'll be back someday soon. Thanks for this wonderful website, especially the tour of New Salem.

Last year I read an article in the SJ-R about a group who used canoes & kayaks to float down the Sangamon river to Petersburg.  It was an annual event and organized by someone in P'burg but I can't find that information anymore.  Does anyone know if that event is planned again for this year and when it will be?  Thanks for your help.

I'm searching for family history information on my mother's family.  Mildred Louise Skaggs, Born Sep 15 1918 in Pleasant Plains, IL.  Menard County.  Attended Rock Creek School and Rock Creek Presbyterian Church.  Died Aug 2004.  Resided in Wrightwood, CA at time of death.  Raised by aunt and uncle, Linda and Robert Carlyle or Carlisle just across the creek from the school, church, and cemetery.  Aunt Elizabeth (Lizzie) Carlisle (Carlyle), numerous brothers and sisters, Betty, Suzie, Tom, Charlie, Frank.  Approx 9 to 10 children in the family.  Parents full names are unknown except for Skaggs and Carlisle (Carlyle).  Many family members have been buried in the Rock Creek Cemetery throughout the years.

Appreciate any information that can be provided.  J. Tiffany

I'm about to buy a home about 4 or 5 miles south of Petersburg that has a Tallula address.  I've found lots of great info on your website and I thank you for that.  I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about wireless internet access offered out of Petersburg?  SBC doesn't offer anything better than dial up at my new home and cable doesn't come there.  I've priced SpeedNet and SpringNet wireless services but the start up costs seem a little much.  Are there any other options worth considering?

I am moving back to central Illinois and am seriously thinking about buying a home in Petersburg.  I am a Springfield native.    I am drawn to Petersburg and consider it to be one of the more attractive towns in central Illinois. I also like the rural character of Menard County as well as the relatively clean environment. I wonder though what the local economy is like in Petersburg.  I subscribe to the Observer and see that the police department seems to have a hard time keeping officers.  Likewise, I am concerned about sprawl and wonder what locals think about the Arrowhead Pointe development to the east of town with its potential 100's of new houses.  Basically, if you would be so kind to let me know what it is like to live in Petersburg on a daily basis as well as your thoughts about the future of the town, I sure would appreciate it.  Thanks!

This is a truly wonderful website.  It has inspired me to visit Petersburg this summer in search of family roots.  I would very much enjoy hearing from anyone with suggestions on how to go about doing that and where I might stay for one or two nights.

My ancestors were Jacob Stein and Paulina Temperance Clark, who were married in 1849 in Menard County and they are buried at Rose Hill.   He was a German immigrant and a landowner and businessman (restaurant?) in Petersburg.  Her father was Henry Clark and her mother was Mary "Polly" Slinker.  They are also buried at Rose Hill.

Very little else is known.  I am not only interested in their lives and times, but the local history of Petersburg in the mid-to-late 1800's as well.

Are there any Stein, Clark, or Slinker families still in the area?
