What a happy surprise to have been contacted by my cousin whom I have not seen in more than 40 years, after accidentally finding this site last August (05) and posting a fond memory of the summers I spent in Petersburg.
Thanks for this site.

I am researching the Woldridge(Wooldridge)family in and around Petersburg and Menard County. I am particularly interested in David and Mary Elisabeth Woldridge who came to Petersburg in the early 1830's. They died between 1857 and 1860. They are supposedly buried in a Woldridge Cemetery that might have been bulldozed  years ago. I am interested in contacting any relatives of the Woldridge's still living in the area.
I was recently in Petersburg for only a few hours and was impressed with the friendly and helpful attitude of the people I met. I'll be going back later this year for sure.

Never knew this site existed. Followed some Lincoln links.
Spent summers with my uncle (Howard Gramm) 1959-62 (?)
He had 2 homes in P-Burgh. One around the corner from the old Western Tire and that mansion known as "White Oaks".
"Unc" moved to FL. on retirement as manager of Illinois Bell. Last I heard he passed away a few years back.
My cousin Karen, was married at White Oaks to a Hudspeth.
I remember "Unc" as a practical joker. One morning, he took me down to the Sangamon for some fishing. We spotted large paw prints in the mud and he told me they were lion tracks.
We both chuckled over that one. Until the next day when in the paper, (may have been TV) we discovered some large cat had got loose from a circus or something.
Anyway, finding this site brought back a lot of lost memories of the best small town in IL.
I probably don't know anyone there, but HELLO from Chi-town nonetheless.

I am doing some genealogy work,  I have a distant cousin who is looking for gravesites at LEBANON CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 1824 -1919.  I would like to know the location and is there a graveyard there?  I am also looking for information and pictures of the Parkinson brothers, John, Earnest & Luther who came here from Wayne county 90+ years ago. They were farm hands.
Also information and pictures of the Claussen Family.  The Barns they built in the first part of the 20th century and especialy a barn with a pencil drawing of a bird near the top or on the top beam. thanks Fred

From 1946 to 1952 I lived in Petersburg with my family. My father was Louis Dunch my mother was Joan and my sister Gerry I'm Donna. I was just a baby then but remember with fond memories growing up in this wonderful town going to Tom Whelin's drugstore and Kirby's grocery store. We lived across the street from the Sewell family and the Dawson family. My father had a business manufacturing farm implements the business had some problems so we moved back to Cleveland, Ohio. I would love to revisit Petersburg the last time we returned was in 1984 and stayed at the Hill Top Motel is it still there?

As a child I attended Third Ward Elementary School, and also the First Baptist Church.  After graduating from Athens High in 1972, I joined the Navy and spent 26 years on active duty, retiring in Chesapeake, Virginia (City forms the western border of the City of Virginia Beach.)  After I retired, I got a job in City government.  One day, while talking with a couple of ladies on break, I discovered one of them was from Petersburg, IL, and still has family just north of town.  We know many of the same families, and her Dad knew my Dad by name.  My family all migrated to Springfield or to Virginia following military service.  One sister still lives just west of town off Route 97.
I enjoy visiting the Petersburg, Athens, and Menard County websites.  The ladies in my office got a good laugh when they saw the Athens City Hall building.  The Chesapeake City Hall is the largest, most elaborate building in the City.  Visit at www.cityofchesapeake.net.

I lived in Petersburg and graduated in 1960.  My husband Bud and I moved to Springfield after we married in 1961.  Abt. a year and half ago we moved to Kingsport, TN.
My question is that I found in my aunt's (from Petersburg) papers a little booklet that had Thomas L. Cantrall, Druggist, Athens, IL stamped on the back of it.  The booklet is "Plough's Black and White Birthday and Dream Book".  I found one booklet listed on the web and it showed dates between 1909-1922.  My question is does anyone know about these old booklets and does anyone remember the druggist Thomas L. Cantrall and where his building was?
On one of the pages in the booklet it shows, "Let lovely Estelle Clark, fascinating Metro Star" tell you about Black and White Lemon Beautifying Cream.  A jar cost 25 cents!!

Letter to the Editor
I would like to let the women of Menard County know of a valuable asset they have!!  In January, I signed up for a  12 week class, the cost was $10.00, not really knowing a lot about it. We got a digi walker included in that. I wanted to loose a little weight, but my cholesterol was a little high, so I needed to learn how to eat properly and how to exercise.  YOU DO NOT WEIGH IN!!  So you don't have to worry about someone knowing how much you weigh.  This class is for women of any age and any stage of weight gain or loss.
We were given information about how to exercise, and enjoy it. We learned how to be healthy.  You don't have to run a mile.  You don't have to work at anyone's pace except your own. Did you know you get just as much good out of three, ten minute walks as you do one, thirty minute walk? If you don't have time to exercise or if you don't like to exercise, they give you great hints on use your time at work, or  while taking care of the home, and family.   Each person sets her own goals. We learned how to make a plan,  the use of a journal, reduce barriers that stop us from exercising, or eating what is good for us instead of what is convenient. They show us how to make healthy food always convenient.  We were given information on eating properly.  Although we occasionally can eat those things we really enjoy.  We are taught that it is PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION  is what is in important!  I have trouble staying with a diet, you learn not to diet but to eat plenty just eat properly. We were given great recipes and we even shared our own.  Our last class we even had cake.
I met a some very very nice ladies through this class!!  Some of us continue to walk even though the class is over.  If you are new to Menard County and want to meet other women, or need to change your eating habits then I suggest this class.  Remember when you used to bike ride or play tennis or just go for a walk!!  Or just do things with your kids.  You will have more energy to keep up with them.
Lynn Espenschied, and Linda Kincaid always answered our health and exercise questions, and when they couldn't when we came back to class the next week they had all of the information we needed.  Each week we were given hand outs to update us or inform us on the topic of that session.
The only thing that I see about this program is you hear about children's being overweight. Maybe  families could learn about nutrition and exercise  through this class together.  The parents and students learning how to exercise and eat healthy.  They can keep each other in check.
Did you know you could walk out at PORTA HIGH SCHOOL  at certain times of the day.  So you don't have to walk outside if it is snowing, raining or to hot.  This is better than driving to White Oaks Mall!!  We have a great asset in our own community.  Lynn and Linda did a great job!!  It was fun and informative.
THANK YOU, LYNN and LINDA

Nice web site.
As a present council member of the City of Petersburg for over 10 years, I have had the opportunity to work with two of the candidates running for Mayor of Petersburg, and I whole-heartedly endorse the Incumbent: Diane Kube. She is the only one with the necessary experience, and she has shown her superior ability as Mayor many times over.

There is no better place to come home to than right here, amidst the woodland hills along the river.  When I moved here from Chicago in 1988, a local resident told me, "If you can't find it in Petersburg, you don't really need it".  I laughed and thought this would be something I would have to learn to live with. I have since come to realize this goes along with, "We travel the world over, in search of happiness and then come home to find it".  I too, love to travel and my fondest part of the journey is re-entering Menard County to smell the sweetness of the country air.  Thank You Petersburg, for being the place I call home.
